About this product
How did the Netherlands come into being? By the struggle against the Spaniards, the water or much more? Are there now 17, 7, 10 or 12 Dutch provinces? Since when does the Rhine enter our country at Lobith? Why is the Hedwigepolder in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen being flooded again? And why is the standing lion which depicts the Netherlands on old maps called Leo Belgicus and was sat down in the early seventeenth century?
Historische atlas NL has answers to these and many more questions in words and pictures. A richly illustrated retrospective in which old maps, peace treaties and other key documents tell the story of the formation of the Netherlands. By far the most historical documents come from the National Archives, the treasure trove of our history. The atlas naturally includes our declaration of independence, the Plakkaat van Verlatinge (1581) and the original version of our current constitution (1848). But also much lesser known documents such as the Treaty of London (1839) which ensured that Roermond was not situated in Belgium but in the Netherlands are covered
The maps in Historische atlas NL range from the oldest cartographic material to new overview maps which show how and when the present national borders came into being and... sometimes still aren't entirely clear.
