The manual contains a variety of scenarios, in which building ship routes to various islands plays an important role. Ships cost 1 wood and 1 wool each, and the rules are similar to building streets. In most scenarios, players receive bonus points for building settlements on other islands, which makes them very motivated to form ship routes. Scenarios vary from fixed playing fields to voyages of discovery where players only find out during the game where the different islands are located. Furthermore, the riverbed is introduced, where gold can be found. Players with a settlement on this tile receive a resource card of their choice.

The rules of the game are almost the same as those of the basic game with extra rules for shipping routes, victory point chits, gold tiles and the pirate.

The Mariners of Catan gives the basic game a completely new dimension and offers endless variation. A must for players who want a new challenge on Catan!
